Jade Gemstone Facts & History

Most of our jade charms are carved from Canadian nephrite jade, mined in the rugged Cassiar Mountains of British Columbia. This region is world-renowned for producing some of the highest quality nephrite jade, prized for its rich green tones and smooth polish.

So what is nephrite jade? Scientifically, jade actually refers to two different stones: nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is a tough, fibrous silicate of calcium and magnesium, known for its durability and soft luster. Jadeite, rarer and often more translucent, comes in a wider range of colors, including the vivid emerald green of “Imperial Jade” from Myanmar.

Across cultures, jade has been treasured for thousands of years — from Chinese emperors who called it the “Stone of Heaven,” to Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest who valued Canadian nephrite for tools, carvings, and adornments. Universally, jade symbolizes protection, prosperity, and harmony, making it both a beautiful and meaningful choice for jewelry.
