Green Gemstone Stories – History, Legends & Symbolism

Green Amber – Found mainly in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, green amber is younger than Baltic amber, often 15–20 million years old (compared to Baltic amber’s 40+ million years). Its green color comes from organic inclusions and the way light refracts through the resin.

Emeralds, Tourmaline, Chrome Diopside & Tsavorite Garnet – Their vivid green hues are caused by chromium and vanadium within the crystal structure. These trace elements give emerald its lush, velvety tones, chrome diopside its deep forest green, and tsavorite garnet its brilliant sparkle.

Prehnite – A calcium aluminum silicate hydroxide mineral, prehnite is usually pale green to yellow-green, with a translucent, soft glow. It often contains striking black inclusions of epidote crystals. Relatively soft at 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, it should be worn with care.

Malachite – Formed from copper carbonate hydroxide, malachite’s vibrant bands of light and dark green are caused by varying copper content. It is soft (3.5–4 Mohs) and easily scratched, making it better suited for pendants or earrings than daily-wear rings.

Turquoise – Treasured for millennia, turquoise was revered as a protective stone by cultures from ancient Egypt to Native American tribes. It was worn as an amulet for safety, health, and spiritual strength.

Across history, green gemstones symbolize vitality, abundance, and renewal, mirroring the life-giving greens of nature that surround us.
